Some very dry months
04 Aug 2014
July/August sees Riverton as dry as it has been since we moved here seven years ago. As these photos show, the country is very dry and our dam is almost dry for the first time since taking over the place. All the cattle are getting a molasses supplement and soon the first calf heifers will start on cotton-seed as well. Our cattle are still quite good but we expect that to change when calving starts shortly. Bring on some early storms!!

The family dog, Jack, is a constant source of entertainment to all who see him. He has elected himself to wage war with the local rabbit population, and only last week he rounded up another victim and brought it out for those present to approve. Jack is part Jack Russell who was rescued from an animal welfare group by Beth and the girls.

Larry’s pride and joy, his race mare, Suite Annie was recently sold to one of the leading thoroughbred racing studs in New South Wales. She won four races for the Actons in Rockhampton, Gladstone and Emerald, but her breeding meant that she was more valuable as a brood mare. She was a half sister to one of Queensland’s best sprinting horses of the last three years, called Buffering.
The 2014 National Feature Show for the Braford breed was held at Theodore. Larry took down seven head of heifers for the prime cattle section, and won the Pen of Three Milk Tooth Heifers Class and came second in the Single Milk Tooth Heifer Class out of 14 mixed breed nominations.
